Tembe

Established in 1983, to protect the last heard of free roaming elephants of South Africa, this park is in the northern most corners of the Elephant Coast. Bordering Mozambique the official opening to the park was delayed until 1991. These majestic animals used to migrate freely between Mozambique and South Africa. Elephants where continuously harassed by poachers on the Mozambique side and where forced to seek refuge in the dense coastal dune forest of the northern regions of the Elephant Coast.

The park is only accessible by hardtop 4x4 vehicles and numbers are limited daily. Boasting with 4 of the Big 5 Tembe's main attraction is the 140 Elephants roaming amongst white and black rhino, buffalo, leopard, zebra and many more. More than 340 bird species has been recorded in the park. To see Rudd's Apalis is a special treat.

The land was negotiated from tribal people who has access to the park for harvesting and they also share in tourism revenue. KZN Wildlife manages the park and the park offers Conference and Lodge facilities that is privately managed and on lease hold from KZN Wildlife.
